How to choose your recessed light fixture

Start with the diameter

Recessed downlights come in standard diameters of 3, 4, 6 and 8 inches. The 4-inch models are the most versatile. The 6-inch suits corridors. The 8-inch gives wider coverage for large commercial spaces.

Pick the beam type

Recessed lights ship with a narrow beam (spot, for accent lighting), medium (flood, for general lighting) or wide. A spot highlights an object; a flood lights a room evenly.

Check ceiling compatibility

Ceiling thickness, structure and insulation all shape your choice of housing. Some models are IC-rated (insulation contact), so they can touch insulation directly with no overheating risk.
