How to choose your metal electrical box

Size it to the wires it holds

Box size comes down to the number of conductors, connectors and devices going inside. The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) sets the maximum fill for each box size. Go too small and you risk overheating and a code violation.

Pick the box type

Outlet boxes mount outlets and switches. A junction box protects splices between wires. Device boxes house specific equipment. Each type comes in square, octagonal, round and rectangular formats to suit the application.

Check depth and mounting

The box has to be deep enough to hold the wires and connectors without cramming them in. Mounting styles vary: stud, surface or ceiling. Confirm it works with the structure you're building into.

Frequently asked questions

We stock outlet, junction and device boxes in square, octagonal, round and rectangular formats, plus box accessories (covers, extensions, fixings).

Size depends on the number of conductors and devices. The CEC sets the minimum volume by wire count. When in doubt, have a qualified electrician confirm the sizing.

Whether you use a metal box or a non-metallic one depends on the wiring method and the environment. Metal boxes are required with metal conduit (EMT, rigid) and give you better mechanical strength.

Every box we carry is CSA-certified, which the Canadian Electrical Code requires for electrical installations.
