How to choose your ceiling light fixture or track light fixture

Know the difference between a flush mount and a track

A flush mount sits tight against the ceiling and throws diffuse, general light. A track light fixture runs on a track, so you can place, slide and aim each head on its own. Track suits any space that needs adjustable light: retail, galleries, kitchens and showrooms.

Set the number of heads and the wattage

On a track, plan one head every 60 to 90 cm for even coverage. Wattage per head runs 12W to 30W LED depending on the job. A retail floor needs brighter light (500 lux) than a residential corridor (100 to 150 lux).

Dial in the colour temperature

Retail floors favour 4000K to 5000K for true colour rendering on products. Workspaces and offices land best at 4000K. Check the colour rendering index (CRI) too, ideally above 80.
