How to choose your PVC cement

Understand how it works

PVC cement isn't an adhesive in the usual sense. It's a solvent that softens the PVC surfaces and chemically fuses them. The joint ends up as strong as the material itself. It's permanent, and there's no undoing it.

Choose the right format

The 125 ml and 250 ml containers suit small residential jobs (10 to 50 joints). The 500 ml and 1 litre containers suit commercial and industrial job sites. Plan for PVC primer on large-diameter conduit (2 inches and up) too: it improves adhesion.

Check the application conditions

PVC cement works best at 5°C to 40°C. In cold weather, the drying time stretches out. Coat both surfaces (conduit and fitting), assemble with a quarter turn and hold for 30 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Primer is recommended on conduit 2 inches and up, and mandatory for certain applications under code. It cleans and softens the surface to improve adhesion. On small diameters (½" to 1½"), the PVC conduit cement alone is generally enough.

Drying time runs from 15 minutes (small diameters, warm weather) to 24 hours (large diameters, cold weather). Check the manufacturer's recommendations on the container for the drying time at your diameter and temperature.

Many electrical pipe cements work for both. Just confirm the cement is approved for electrical PVC conduit (not plumbing only) and that it meets CSA standards.
