How to choose your canopy light

Identify the application and the area to light

A canopy light mounts surface or recessed under a covered ceiling that's open to the outdoors. Common applications include gas stations, commercial building entrances, bus shelters and covered walkways. The mounting height (generally 3 to 5 metres) and the surface area set the wattage you need.

Check the IP rating and resistance

Even under a canopy, the fixture takes on temperature swings, humidity and the occasional water splash. IP65 is the recommended minimum. Look for an extended operating temperature range (-40°C to +50°C) for installations in Quebec.

Choose the right luminous flux

Gas station canopies need intense, uniform light (300 to 500 lux at ground level). For building entrances or walkways, 100 to 200 lux is plenty. The spec sheets give the flux in lumens and the distribution pattern.

Frequently asked questions

A canopy light is built to light covered areas open on the sides: gas stations, commercial entrances, shelters and walkways. It throws uniform light downward and stands up to the elements. For gas stations, an explosion-proof model is essential: these zones are classified as hazardous (ATEX) because fuel vapours are always present, and the fixture has to keep an internal spark from triggering an external explosion.

Every fixture Accès Distribution Produits distributes carries CSA certification. They're backed by a manufacturer warranty of 5 to 10 years depending on the manufacturer.

LED canopy lights last 50,000 hours or more, which works out to more than 10 years of continuous use. LED cuts replacement and maintenance costs compared with conventional technologies.

Some models are made for recessed mounting in the canopy ceiling, while others mount on the surface. Check the product's spec sheet for the available mounting options.
