Electrical meter bases

Electricity meter and distribution box mounted on an exterior wall.

An electrical meter base ties the utility grid to the building's main panel. Accès Distribution Produits stocks single, multiple and built-in breaker meter bases, all CSA-certified and built to Hydro-Quebec requirements. They're the starting point for new construction, expansions and electrical service upgrades.

How to choose your meter base

Determine the type of service

The base you need depends on the service: a single meter base for a single-family home, a multiple base (2, 4 or 6 meters) for multi-unit buildings, or a meter base with breaker that combines metering and main protection in one enclosure.

Check the amperage rating

Residential bases are typically 100A or 200A. Commercial and industrial installations may call for 320A, 400A or more. The rating has to match the building's load calculation, validated by an electrician.

Confirm utility compliance

Hydro-Quebec requires bases that meet its technical specifications. Make sure the model you choose appears on your utility's approved equipment list. The service entrance fittings have to be compatible too.

Frequently asked questions

For a standard single-family home, a 200A single base is the usual call. With electric heating and air conditioning in the mix, 200A gives you the headroom for current and future load.

A meter base with breaker rolls metering and main protection together, which cuts the number of components and simplifies the install. Confirm the model is approved by your utility.

The bases we carry are CSA-certified. Compliance with Hydro-Quebec's specific requirements has to be confirmed against the exact model, so check your utility's approved equipment list.

Service entrance fittings are essential for tying the supply conduit to the base. Connectors, conduit and fixing parts round out the install.
